现代土地才管钱，中国古代官府可以允许百姓自己开荒地种庄稼（增加税收）甚至埋尸（人死为大），前提是土地要肥沃（事实上，农作物的生长条件很苛刻，有水源且有养分，能作为耕地的土地很少，这些耕地又被少数人控制，这就是地主阶级崛起的原因），埋尸的风水要好，不然会得不偿失。而且中国一直秉持尊重死者的传统，有些无人认领的尸首甚至还有专门的义庄收尸入殓安葬（不然，中国几千年来改朝换代、诸侯混战、洪灾旱灾，死了无数人，不埋早就跟欧洲一样闹黑死病了），料理后事的主要成本是棺木、陪葬和做道场，即所谓的“风光大葬”，埋骨之地其实随处可寻。
