改革开放后，黄婉秋曾远赴东南亚、欧洲等地演出，把“刘三姐”形象与中国山歌带给那里的观众。音乐无国界，《刘三姐》让许多不懂汉语的外国人，也喜欢上了中国的山歌。黄婉秋说：“这印证了一句话，对于艺术来说，越是民族的越是世界的。优秀的民族艺术，必然能够引起世界的共鸣。”
